My View on Pit Bull Ownership and Aggressive dogs… (Tips and links on dealing with aggression in dogs, EVEN Pit Bulls)
Are they too dangerous to be kept as pets?
Should they all be euthanised?
Are they an aggressive breed?
My answer to all three is NO.
The reason for all of this controversy in my opinion, is that Pit Bulls are among the MANY MANY MANY breeds of ‘dominant’ dog. ALL dogs need to have a ‘pack’ structure within the family home, with EVERY human in the house ranked higher than them. Some dogs will passively accept this social status, others will fight it. In the case that a dog attempts to become Alpha dog, you MUST train them and show them firmly that he/ she is in fact the BOTTOM of the pack, below YOU, your PARTNER and YOUR KIDS! If this is done correctly (which takes time and consistency) then there will be no attacks, no babys being killed or mauled.
Some tips for how to handle attempting to be Alpha dogs of ANY BREED INCLUDING PIT BULLS!
- MOST IMPORTANTLY! If there is anyone that would be unable to handle being threatened or bitten by the dog, they must NOT be left alone with him/ her! This includes young children, the elderly, those uncomfortable around dogs and strangers whom the dog will probably feel aggressive towards.
- If the dog has already bitten or is likely to bite unprovoked, get a muzzle. This will prevent any serious attacks during the training or when the dog is in the company of those in the group mentioned above.
- Set rules and boundaries and STICK TO THEM! Give the humans in the house privileges unavailable to the dog, e.g. sitting on the sofa. If your family is on the sofa and the dog is on the floor, you are establishing that he/ she is ranked below the others. Feed the dog once everyone else has finished a meal, make the dog walk behind you when on walks etc.
- Leading on from the walking point, EXERCISE THE DOG. A dog with little exercise is more likely to become aggressive, so its a good idea to walk the dog regularly. Try avoiding places filled with people/ dogs initially and muzzle the dog if it bites. You can also buy a ‘Gentle Leader’ if you find the dog difficult to walk, which allows control over the face of the dog. It may also be a good idea to purchase chew toys, but take care if engaging in a game of ‘tug’ as it can bring out the docks Alpha tendencies.
- Begin consistent obedience training, this will lead the dog to feel more trustworthy of you and bond with you.
- NEVER get angry or aggressive towards your dog, its counterproductive.
- Use positive reinforcement, not negative. When your dog responds well to obedience training pet or reward him/ her with a toy. NEVER use negative reinforcement such as choke collars or shock collars.
- Eventually you should try to carefully socialise the dog with other people and in time, other dogs. At the beginning of the training if the dog is still incredibly wary of strangers and or other dogs, begin with a stranger that is confident with dogs and get them to make the dog settle and sit and give him/ her a treat.
- Consider purchasing your dog a crate. When a dog has its own place to go to and sleep in they feel much more comfortable. DO NOT use the crate as a form of punishment and don’t lock them inside it, it is a safe place for them so it must be disassociated with bad behaviour.
Overall, ANY dog can be a good family pet if it is raised/ rehabilitated well and if the correct precautions are in place to prevent any attacks.

People like this should be forever banned from owning a pet.
A man is shown encouraging his Pit bull to attack and kill a pregnant cat. People must understand the encouraging ANY violent behaviour within ANY breed of dog will have serious consequences on the dogs overall manner. THIS is the reason so many Pit bulls attack and leads to the demonisation of an entire breed. How some owners treat their pets is disgusting and a completely overlooked aspect of a dogs personality.
In this situation, I feel the dog should be taken in by a specialist willing to spend the time required to re- train and earn this dogs trust. That way it can be rehoused and live out a happy life. Sadly, I would not be surprised if the animal suffers more than the man in this case.

ALL PIT BULL OWNERS, LOVERS, OR ACTIVISTS!!
As you may already know, there is a sickening legislation in the U.K and many other regions accross the world known as ‘Breed Specific Legislation’ or simply ‘BSL’ which means basically any Pit Bull, Pitty mix or breed with similar proportions to a a Pitty can be seized from it’s family and killed. Simply for being or looking like a pit bull. I for one find this utterly appalling and would like to fight for the rights of Pit Bulls and prove that they aren’t the cold blooded killers they are made out to be in the media.
